Energy Manager

You have the power to be the Energy Manager of your household. You can determine how much electricity household items use, the cost of that energy, and what you can do to control those costs. Use the energy saving ideas in this booklet to learn how to operate your electrical items as efficiently as possible.

Learn how to read your electric meter, then track your usage daily to monitor consumption of electricity in your home.

The Three Parts of Electric Rates

Three important components make up the price of every electric bill, also known as kWh. The Distribution charge, the Transmission Charge, and the Electricity Supply charge.  These factors added together are your total cost per kilowatt-hour.

Keep this information as an easy reference. It is the basis of every calculation you do while working with this booklet. You can find the numbers on your electric bill.

Today's Date:___________
Name of Supplier: _______________
Distribution Charge (+) _______¢ per kWh
Transmission Charge (+) _______¢ per kWh
Electricity Supply Charge (+) ______¢ per kWh
Total Cost (=) ______¢ per kWh

As you change suppliers, your charges will change. Emera Maine no longer sells electricity, we only deliver electricity. Therefore, the electricity supply price you are charged is determined by the supplier you choose, or the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) Standard Offer price if you do not choose a supplier.
