Emera Maine Distribution Rate Request

During the week of March 4, customers will receive legal notice of Emera Maine’s request to change distribution rates. We want to share some information with you about the request and why we’ve made it.

Emera Maine is requesting an increase to one of the rates on the electric bill, which is the distribution rate. The requested increase to the distribution rate is 18%.

bill impact

A residential customer with typical usage of 500 kilowatt-hours a month has an electric bill of around $92. If our request is approved, the increase would add $5.75 to the total bill, which is an increase of about 6%, beginning in 2020.

Our investments
are customer-driven

Over the last two years, Emera Maine has put additional emphasis on reliability improvements, including dedicating engineering analysis to focus on minimization and elimination of customer outages. We're starting to see results from new measures to improve reliability, and we want to continue to make progress.

We are seeing more severe storms. We expect system improvements will, over time, result in fewer outages and fewer hours without power, especially when severe weather conditions affect the grid. We're installing equipment to automatically isolate and restore as many areas as possible during an outage. New technologies also require modernization to keep our infrastructure up to date.

We hear from our customers, from those on fixed incomes to large commercial operations, that they rely on us to provide cost-effective and reliable power. The No. 1 cause of outages is falling trees and tree limbs. We're working in earnest with landowners to identify and remove more "danger trees" in declining health outside our right-of-way. In 2017, these types of trees accounted for about 70% of tree-related outages.

We know that our customers are concerned about rising rates. At the same time, we know we need to make improvements to meet our customers' changing expectations. We want to meet our customers' needs with every contact, so we're constantly improving processes to deliver better service.

If you have additional questions or comments about our rate request, please email us and let us know. Information on proceeding participation is provided in your Customer Notice or you can visit the MPUC online case management system.
